Meet Results
Nine Wabash wrestlers earned top-six finishes at Saturday's John Summa Tourament. The Little Giants finished fourth out of 27 teams.
A pair of Little Giants earned top-four places in the 197-pound weight class.
Ian Kelton grabbed second place with a solid showing at Saturday's competition. He started with a 3-2 decision over Kevin Gaughan from the University of Indianapolis, then knocked off Theron Mitchell from Washington & Jefferson 6-5 to advance to the semifinals. Kelton recorded a pin (2:30) in the semis, advancing to face Ohio Northern's Michael Pawlitz. Pawlitz scored a quick pin to put Kelton in second place.
Joining Kelton on the podium at 197 pounds was
Ryan Sandwith, who finished fourth in the weight class. He lost his opening bout 11-5, but rallied for a pin in the consolation bracket at the 2:58 mark of his match against Gaughan. Sandwith then defeated Jon Schaefer from Lake Erie College 7-3 in the next round, followed by a 4-1 win over Dave Sickler from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Sandwith lost 11-3 in the finals to take fourth place.
Josh Boyer finished third at 125 pounds. He won a tight 9-8 decision in his opening match, but lost by pin in his second. Boyer followed that loss with a 9-7 victory in the semifinals before defeating Cole Cochran from Ohio Northern 6-4 in the finals.
Daniel Sandberg was also third in the 184-pound weight class. He opened with a 6-4 win over Tyler Brent from RIT, but lost by the same score in the next round. Sandberg responded with a 7-2 victory in the finals over Brent once again to claim third place.
Justin Dickey was fourth at 149 pounds. After losing his first bout 7-1, Dickey rallied for three consecutive victories in the consolation bracket. He started the string with an 11-6 win against Braden Fyffe from Washington & Jefferson, then defeated Adam Hugunine from RIT by a score of 4-1. A 9-4 decision in the next round, followed by a injury forfeit in the semifinals put Dickey up against David Lopez in the finals, with Lopez winning 12-7 to place Dickey in the four spot in the final standings.
Jake Moore finished fifth at 165 pounds. He started with a dominating 20-5 technical fall in his first bout, followed by a 10-8 decision in the second round. A 10-5 loss sent Moore to the consolation bracket, where a 10-4 loss moved him into the fifth place bout, which he won by an injury forfeit.
Logan Cooper also took fifth place at 174 pounds. He scored a pair of huge wins with a tecnical fall (20-5) in his first bout and a pin at 2:05 into his second. A 3-0 loss in the championship semifinals dropped him into the consolation bracket, but another loss moved him into the fifth place bout. Cooper picked up a pin in the finals over Jared Merritt of Lake Erie College.
Cody McKinnon took sixth place at 174 pounds, while
Zach Stone added a sixth-place finish in the 285-pound weight class. McKinnon won his opening match 9-2 before an injury forced him out of the tournament. Stone rallied from an opening round loss to record a pin at the 2:20 mark of his second bout of the day, followed by a forfeit victory and a 4-2 win in the consolation quarterfinals before a pair of close loses put him in sixth place.
Brockport won the team competition with a total of 204 points. Ohio Northern was second (160.5 points), followed by Lake Erie (138.5). Wabash scored 95 points to finish fourth.
