Six Wabash players earned places on the 2012 All-North Coast Athletic Conference Baseball Team, announced Wednesday morning. Four were selected to the First Team, including senior
John Holm who was named Baseball Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.
Joining Holm as First Team selections were
Chris Deig,
Montana Timmons, and
JT Miller.
Luke Zinsmaster and
Tyler Hampton received Honorable Mention All-NCAC honors.
Holm, the 2011 Player of the Year, led the NCAC in home runs (11), RBI (41), and tied for the league lead in total bases (89). His 11 home runs rank him seventh in the nation among Division III players. Holm will graduate after setting the Wabash all-time records for career home runs (41), single season homers (15 in 2010), career RBI (171), single season RBI (52 in 2011), career total bases (360), single season total bases (112 in 2010), career times hit by a pitch (31), career double plays turned (83), career slugging percentage (.641), single season slugging percentage (.747 in 2010), and tied for the most career games played (162) and career sacrifice flies (11). He tied for third on the all-time triples list with 9, and ranks fouth in career hits with 185. Holm earned Honorable Mention All-America honors from D3baseball.com in 2011, making him the second player in Little Giant baseball history to be named an All-American.
Deig was a First Team All-NCAC in pick in 2011 in addition to this season, and earned Second Team honors in 2010. He tied for second in the NCAC in total hits this season with 57 and ranked fourth in runs scored with 39. Deig set the all-time hits record at Wabash with 206, becoming the first player in Little Giant history to record more than 200 hits. His 64 hits in 2011 also set the single-season record for Wabash. He played in 162 career games, equaling the mark set by Holm, and trails Holm in second place in times hit by pitches (23). He ranks second in sacrifice hits (17) and third in career runs scored (124).
Timmons earned First Team honors for the third straight season. The junior tied with Deig for second in the league in total hits with 57 this year. He ripped 15 doubles to tie for third among NCAC players. Through just three season Timmons already ranks third in Wabash history with 37 doubles and fourth in sacrifice flies (10). He is tied for fourth in career RBI with 107 and ranks seventh in career hits (164). He posted a perfect fielding percentage this season, moving to right field after two years as a left fielder for Wabash. He recorded 55 putouts and had four assists without an error.
Miller earned First Team in honors in his first season as a starting pitcher for the Little Giants. He led the NCAC with 76 strikeouts, the second-highest single-season total in Wabash baseball history. He set a new Wabash single-game record by striking out 17 Wooster batters. Miller finished the season with a record of 5-3 with one save in nine starts and 12 appearances. His 71.2 innings pitched also led all NCAC pitchers, while he ranked third in earned run average with a mark of 2.39. Miller allowed just 19 earned runs and 15 walks, holding opposing teams to 66 hits for a batting average of .244 for the season.
Zinsmaster earned All-NCAC honors for the first time in his career. Primarily used as a closer for the Little Giants, he posted a 3.21 earned run average this season with a 3-2 record while recording two saves. He allowed 25 hits in 28 innings while finishing the season with 25 strikeouts and only nine walks. Opposing teams scored 10 earned runs in 16 appearances and hit .236 against the right-hander. Zinsmaster tied for the most career appearances with 58 in four seasons and is tied for third in career saves with 7.
Hampton earned Honorable Mention honors in his first season as a catcher for Wabash. He hit .309 for the season, collecting 30 hits in 97 at bats with 13 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs, and 20 RBI. He hit two home runs in the Little Giants' final game of a four-game series at Wittenberg. His third home run of the season came when he hit his first career grand slam at DePauw in the final series of the season. Hampton threw out eight base runners in 29 games behind the plate this season. He started 28 of the Little Giants' 40 games.
Former Wabash baseball player
Jake Martin '03 was named the NCAC Baseball Coach of the Year. Martin guided his DePauw baseball team to a second-place finish in the Tigers' first season in the conference.
