McKinney and Rinne Finish 1-2 at Inter-Regionals

Mason McKinney and Colin Rinne placed first and second, respectively, at the Oberlin College Inter-Regional Rumble Saturday to guide the Wabash cross country team to a third-place finish out of 32 teams.

The duo sat second and third over the first 3200 meters of the race before McKinney took the lead prior to the 6,000-meter mark. McKinney crossed the line in first with a time of 24:41.2. Rinne dropped to sixth at 6,000 meters but raced back to front to place second at 24:45.0.

Dominic Patacsil captured seventh place. The sophomore raced in sixth place most of the race before finishing in 24:57.9.

Freshman Johnny Kirts completed the race with a season-best effort of 26:07.5 to place 58th. He topped his previous best time of 26:38.2 set two weeks prior at the Louisville Classic. Aaron Tincher turned in his best career time by finishing in 26:21.2 for 72nd place while bettering his previous best time of 26:25.0.

Andrew Brake added another personal-best time for Wabash by crossing the line in 27:36.0 to place 170th out of 278 competitors. Freshman Chandler Steward clocked in at 27:52.4 to finish 184th.  Drew Lukens finished 191st with a time of 27:57.2.

"Our top three ran great," Wabash head coach Colin Young said. "We had a good day to run with 60-degree weather on a fast course. We're coming around as a team heading into the conference meet. We'll add Murphy Sheets and Sam Henthorn. Both stayed back at Wabash today to recover from a little hip soreness. We should be even faster in two weeks and hopefully faster following that race."

Carnegie Mellon won the team competition with 75 points. Mount Union, one of the Little Giants Great Lakes Region opponents, placed second with 123 points. Wabash scored 138 for third place, leading Washington and Lee in fourth place with 160 points.

The Little Giants will race at the NCAC Championships Sunday, October 30 at the LaVern Gibson cross country course in Terre Haute, Indiana. DePauw University is the host school for the meet.
