The Wabash College wrestling team honored the senior members of its 2016-17 team prior to Thursday evening's 45-5 home victory over Trine University.
Â
The Little Giants scored on four pins, three decisions, and two forfeits to score points in nine of the ten matches.
Â
Prior to the beginning of competition, seniors
Allen Betts,
Jeff Mucha,
Connor Brummett,
Luke Davis,
Nick Bova,
Mark Maldonado,
Lincoln Kyle,
Christian Rodriguez, and
Riley Lefever were celebrated for their four-year accomplishments and contributions to the Little Giant program.
Â
"This class has been huge for us with its consistency," Wabash head coach
Brian Anderson said. "To see that many guys out there to stick with the program in a very tough sport shows how they've set the standard for this program with what they've accomplished at the national level the last three years and what we're going to accomplish this year. There's not too many groups like that to come through this place. It's fun to see them out there, but it's heartbreaking to know we only have a little bit of time left with them. That's the worst part of coaching, when you have to let them go."
Â
On the mat, Wabash took an early 12-5 lead over the Thunder with forfeits for
Chris Diaz at 133 pounds and
Brice Everson at 141.
Griffin Schermer earned the first team points in competition for the Little Giants with a 9-6 victory over Caleb Maddox at 149 pounds. Sophomore
Connor Guzior scored a shutout win at 157 pounds by defeating Nick Miller 6-0.
Â
Wabash notched pins in four of the remaining five matches. Brummett raced out to a 14-5 lead in his 165-pound bout versus Brandon Gay before closing out with fall at the 4:34 mark of the match.
Darden Schurg scored three early takedowns at 174 pounds, eventually earning an 11-6 win over Austin Farrell.
Â
Myron Howard opened the final three matches with a pin of JayCee Jensen at 184 pounds. Howard picked up two take downs along with nearfall points in the first period before racking up six more points by nearfall in the second. He continued scoring throughout the final period before putting Jensen on his back in the final four seconds of the match.
Â
Lefever dispatched Anthony Neal 1:02 into their 197-pound bout by fall. Freshman
Sam Hipple ended the night with a first-period pin of Zach Saylor at the 1:25 mark of their heavyweight showdown.
Â
Wabash returns to the mats Saturday as host of the annual Max Servies Duals. The six-team dual-meet event begins at 9 a.m. in the Knowling Fieldhouse on the Wabash campus.
