David R. Moore ’69

David R. Moore, native of Winchester, the National Association of Wabash Men welcomes you to its Athletics Hall of Fame. You came to Wabash in the fall of 1965 as a two-sport high school star, but focused on basketball under the tutelage of Coach Rusty Nichols. Over the three years during which you played, you would become a high-scoring guard who could easily drop in 20 points in any given contest.

As a sophomore, the Little Giants’ highlights were few in a 4-16 season. Your 10 points-per-game average indicated your potential, and you played a key part in Wabash’s stunning 81-71 win over Butler in Hinkle Fieldhouse, the Little Giants’ first win over their old rivals in nearly a decade. As a sophomore, you stepped up to score 445 points and your 22.3 points-per-game average remains the ninth best ever at Wabash. The start of your season was fast — draining 35 on Albion and helping Wabash win the Rose Poly Tournament with 36 points against the hosts. You were named to the All-Tourney Team and the Mental Attitude Award winner at the GLCA Christmas Classic. You also teamed with Hall of Famer Terry Smith to score 49 of Wabash’s 88 points in a 12-point win over a heavily favored DePauw team.

You were named the Most Valuable Player in your senior season with a simply remarkable campaign. You had big scoring nights in wins over nationally ranked MacMurray, an early season game with Wheaton, and you poured in 36 in a tight loss to Tony Hinkle’s Butler Bulldogs. By season’s end, you were honored with the team’s Sportsmanship Award to go with MVP honors. You scored 517 points and averaged 24.6 points per contest — to this day the fifth highest scoring average in Wabash history.

Your name continues to dot the Wabash record book — your 19.3 career scoring average is 11th all-time and you are in elite company among players who scored more than 35 points in three or more games. Your talent earned you a spot as a member of the Indiana-Kentucky College All-Star Team. You took your psychology major and economics major into a long and successful career as an investment broker, but never strayed too far from the hardwood — playing industrial league and Gus Macker ball — though we can’t quite figure out why you returned to distance running to compete in marathons.

David R. Moore, the National Association of Wabash Men has a fondness for high-scoring Little Giants, and your dynamic net-filling ability makes it our pleasure to induct you in the Wabash College Athletics Hall of Fame.
