Shelbourne came from Gary, Indiana, to star in both Wabash College football and wrestling, lettering four time in each sport. For his gridiron prowess he earned Academic All-America (College Division) recognition as a senior. In wrestling, Shelbourne served as co-captain and earned the MVP award both his junior and senior seasons. He added to his wrestling awards, subsequent to graduation, an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

His continued interest in athletics is manifest in his career in medicine. He capped his studies in orthopedics at Indiana University with a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Wisconsin. A member of numerous orthopedic and sports medicine groups, Shelbourne owns a private practice and previously served as the team physician and orthopedic surgeon for the Indianapolis Colts. He is also the orthopedic consultant to Wabash and Purdue University. Still active athletically, Shelbourne raced and completed the Boston Marathon in 1985 and 1986.
