Kevin D. McCarthy, it is a real pleasure to introduce you tonight — the first student-athlete in my tenure at Wabash to be inducted into the Wabash Athletics Hall of Fame. From the time you arrived on campus, you seemed destined for greatness. Coach Roger Busch and I knew that you could be great in almost anything you wanted to do — in the classroom, laboratory, and in track and cross country. And you were. You were intelligent, thoughtful, and willing to be uncomfortable at times in pursuit of greatness. You were also a tenacious and fearless competitor who thrived in the most competitive races.

Your accomplishments as a runner are a testament to your versatility. You were an All-American in six different events — five times in track and field and once in cross country. You brought Wabash its first track and field national championship in 30 years when you won the 2012 title in the indoor mile. You were also an All-American by placing sixth in the 2010 indoor 800, fifth in the 2010 outdoor 1,500, fifth in the 2010 outdoor 3,000-meter steeplechase, and third in the 2012 outdoor 1,500. You set the Wabash and Knowling Fieldhouse records in the mile run, set the school record for the outdoor 1,500, and helped set the school record in the distance medley relay.

You were also a steady leader and top scorer for the Wabash cross country team, taking sixth place in the 2011 National Championships — the highest finish by a Little Giant since Coach Busch in 1995. You were also an excellent student, graduating with honors, winning the Indianapolis Alumni Association Scholar-Athlete Award and the Pete Vaughan Award, and becoming an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient.

If ever there was a “golden age” of distance running at Wabash, you were in the middle of it. On behalf of the National Association of Wabash Men, I am proud to induct you into the Wabash College Athletics Hall of Fame.
