Coach Ralph Jones helped turn “Brandy” Freeman into one of the nation’s finest basketball players on the world’s greatest team. Montgomery County was the hotbed of early high school basketball, and Freeman attended prep school at Wabash from nearby Waynetown, Indiana before enrolling in the College in the fall of 1904. A three-year “W” letterman on the College’s most successful teams of all-time, Freeman was a starting member of Wabash’s original “Wonder Five” in 1908.
In his first two years with the Little Giants, Freeman helped Wabash produce a 34-3 record with a combined record of 9-1 against Indiana, Purdue, and Illinois. The following season, in 1907-08, Freeman earned Honorable Mention All-America honors as a starting member of the 24-0, World Champion team that defeated Columbia, Notre Dame, Louisville, and Vanderbilt. He later served as principal and basketball coach at Crawfordsville High School for a number of years.
