Doc Joyce earned nine letters as a Little Giant --- three each in football, basketball, and baseball. In his senior year, he received Honorable Mention All-America tackle notice from the Associated Press, and he led Wabash to the Indiana Secondary College Basketball Championship.
As Wabash's ace pitcher, he went 21-3 in his three varsity baseball campaigns. His baseball career continued upon graduation, as Doc went on to pitch four seasons in the Boston Red Sox farm system.
Following a seven-year stint as a high school teacher and coach in Camden and Logansport, and a five-year involvement in the Navy during World War II, Doc served twenty-five years at the Marion, Indiana, Veterans' Hospital as sports director, recreation service chief, and voluntary service director. Doc was also a part-time scout for the Cincinnati Reds from 1960-1970. In 1981, he retired as co-owner of a flower and gift shop in Marion.
