Mel came to Wabash in the fall of 1977 from Gary's Andrean High School, where he was not only a standout student, but a fine defensive back in football and sprinter on the track team. Gore came to Wabash during one of the football team's greatest eras of all-time. He was a four-year starter and letterman in both football and track. As a starting defensive back in football, Gore helped Wabash to a combined, four-year record of 35-4-1. Recruited by Coach Frank Navarro, Gore got to Wabash just in time to start on the magical 1977 team which posted an 11-2 record and finished the season at the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. Success continued for Wabash football during Gore's sophomore and junior years as the team posted back-to-back 8-1 seasons with seasonĀ ending wins over DePauw. Co-captain of the Wabash football team as a senior, Gore led Wabash to an undefeated 8-0-1 campaign, earning all-America honors along the way. Named Wabash's Outstanding Defensive Back in his senior season, Gore went on to also earn the team's Senior Scholarship Award. In track and field, Gore was a swift: sprinter and two-time co-captain who helped Wabash to a Little State Championship io 1979. Gore combined the best of both the academic and athletic worlds as a Wabash economics major and business minor. A Cum Laude graduate, Gore became Wabash's ninth NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient. He took the scholarship money and earned his MBA from the University of Notre Dame. Now a highly-successful real estate developer, broker, and entrepreneur, Gore is the owner of Subway Sandwich Shop restaurants in Portage, Lake Station, and Porter. He also specializes in residential and commercial development with his own business, Gore Realty Company, and has recently completed development of subdivisions in Portage and Valparaiso.
