Jones came to Wabash as basketball coach in 1904 and his first season led the Little Giants to an 8-0 record. Over the next four season he built a 75-6 record, including two undefeated seasons in 1904 and 1908. His 1908 team was 24-0 and heralded as "world champions" by the Indianapolis newspapers.

Jones also coached the Wabash football team for one season (1908) following Francis Cayou's departure. Jones coached both football and basketball at Purdue, Illinois, and Lake Forest Academy before joining the Chicago Bears. At Chicago he installed his earlier Wabash innovation, the Bear T, and the Chicago Bears won the NFL championship in 1932.

Jones left the Bears and returned to the college ranks. He coached all sports at Lake Forest College until his retirement in 1949. He died July 25, 1951.
