VanArsdale was a four-year letter winner in track and was team captain in 1923, his senior year. He was a member of the Wabash relay team which won several Illinois and Drake Relay championships. He still holds the school long jump record of 23 feet, 5 inches, which he set in 1923 to finish second at the NCAA Championship meet.
He taught at Indianapolis Manual High School for many years and is the father of former Indiana University and NBA stars Tom and Dick VanArsdale. He died in 1973.
