Hall of Fame coach Pete Vaughan recruited Raymond Greve to play forward for the Wabash basketball team in the fall of 1939. A native of nearby Waveland, Indiana, Greve played for three legendary coaches—Vaughan, Herm Berns, and Dale Davis by the time he graduated from Wabash in 1943. During the war-torn years and amidst headlines of bombings and brutality, the history major entertained fans and lit up the scoreboards where ever the Little Giants played. A brilliant scorer and solid all-around athlete, Greve was a three-time scoring champ and three-time all conference selection. Greve’s individual talents helped Wabash to a combined 26-11 Indiana Conference record during his three starting seasons.
Greve and the Little Giants peaked during the 1942-43 season when Wabash posted a 14-game winning streak, won the Indiana Conference championship with a 10-1 record, and finished 15-6 overall. A two-time captain, Greve was the league’s second leading scorer, set a Wabash record with 34 points in one game, and best of all, Greve’s 16 points helped Wabash defeat DePauw to win the conference title. Greve was a member of Kappa Sigma, the Sphinx Club, and the “W” Men’s Club.
