A football and basketball standout at Crawfordsville, Vaughan later earned all-American honors in football at Notre Dame and Princeton. After coaching basketball and football at Purdue, he arrived at Wabash following the conclusion of World War I. His 27 football teams compiled a 112-85-23 record, including six consecutive shutout wins over DePauw in the 1920s. In basketball, he coached the Wonder Five teams of 1922 and 1925, the former acclaimed national champion. His 21-year basketball record was 194-175. He also served as track coach for five seasons. The Wabash Athlete of the Year Award is named for Vaughan.
Vaughan died February 17, 1969.
