An all-state fullback as a junior at Richmond High School and as a senior at Crawfordsville High School, Stan entered Wabash in 1950 and played on the undefeated team of 1951. He still holds school records for his five touchdowns against Ball State in 1952 and for his 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Ohio Wesleyan in 1953.
A member of his father's track teams at Wabash, Stan went on to coach track and cross country and led his University of Tennessee Volunteers to NCAA championships in both sports. One of his greatest accomplishments was being named as a coach for the U.S. team at the Montreal Olympics in 1976.
