Native son of Crawfordsville and legendary friend of the Little Giants, Chick Clements was a star athlete in high school, playing football and baseball. After attending Butler University and serving in Korea, Chick signed on with Wabash to be the College’s equipment manager. No title has ever given less credit to a person who has done so much for so many. Chick has been a mainstay—a constant—who, behind his “cage” has befriended, mentored, and been a father to literally thousands of Wabash student-athletes in the 32 years he has served Wabash College. He shoots hoops, lifts weights, and jogs incessantly, and when Wabash is not in session, he can be found catching smallmouth bass in Sugar Creek or walleye at Raccoon Lake.
The standards of his trade are laundry, field painting, and equipment upkeep, but the gifts he’s shared with Wabash men over the years are immeasurable. He’s picked up men when they were down; helped solve countless relationship problems; given career advice; been wise counsel; and has even shared a fishing hole or two over the years.
Wabash’s alumni have long recognized Chick’s contributions, naming him an Honorary Alumnus for the Class of 1977 and IAWM Monon Bell “Man of the Year” in 1996. In his 32 years with Wabash, Chick has celebrated every Little Giant victory and shared in every defeat, and always with the pride and passion of “Some Little Giant.”
