Native son of the Hoosier state, you finished your high school basketball career in Connecticut, where you were captain and most valuable player on a very good team. You chose to walk on at the University of North Carolina and were a key member of an undefeated freshman team, playing alongside NBA Hall of Famer Billy Cunningham. After your family moved back to Indianapolis, you transferred to Wabash. North Carolina’s loss was Wabash’s very special gain. Your ability to handle the ball, score, play defense, and rebound impressed Coach Bob Brock, and by the fourth game of your junior year you became a starter. You stayed in that starting role the remainder of your career, and provided the Wabash faithful with so many cherished memories by bringing a Jordanesque quality to the floor.

You seemed especially to like playing Butler, for you averaged more than 22 points-per-game in those contests. Many men from your era also recall your incredible performance in a rebound win over a highly regarded Wisconsin-Milwaukee team. Your relentless style of play was evident and earned for you the respect of your teammates, along with captain and most valuable player honors. Your statistics were impressive, too; your team-leading 19.5 scoring average as a senior continues to rank among the finest individual seasons in Wabash history. Most importantly, your inspirational play—some called it “scrappy”—ignited the crowds at Chadwick Court and motivated your teammates.

While you only graced Chadwick Court for two brief seasons, your impact was profound, and for that the National Association of Wabash Men is proud to induct you, Thomas “Tim” Werbe, in the Wabash College Athletics Hall of Fame.
