Spaulding transferred to Wabash from Lawrence University in 1904. He played halfback and was captain of the original Little Giant team. He also played on the 1905 team that beat Notre Dame at South Bend, the last home defeat for the Irish until 1928.

After graduation from Wabash he entered the coaching ranks and built a 144-83-16 career record in 32 years of coaching at Western Michigan, Minnesota, and UCLA. He retired from coaching in 1947 and became athletic director at UCLA. In 1954 he had a playing field at UCLA named in his honor.

He is a member of the Helms Football Foundation Hall of Fame. In 1941, he received an honorary master of arts degree from Wabash, the last ever granted by the College. He died in 1966.
