A native of Crawfordsville, Boone grew up and played high school sports at nearby Fountain Central High School. An outstanding and versatile athlete, Boone came to Wabash in the fall of 1977 as a highly-recruited student/athlete. A star in football, basketball, and baseball, Boone earned 11 varsity letters at Wabash and was the last four-year, three-sport athlete at Wabash. In football, Boone earned three letters and led the team with 35 pass receptions his senior year: A point guard on the basketball team, Boone lettered four times and averaged about eight points per game. Baseball, though, is where Boone excelled. As a senior he was named team captain and Most Valuable Player. His .448 batting average won both the team batting title and honorable mention AllAmerican honors. His career batting average of .378 and his 58 career stolen bases remain Wabash records. Boone won the Pete Vaughan Outstanding Athlete Award in 1989. Now Wabash's head baseball coach and assistant football coach, Boone was named the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1988 when his team set a standard for excellence with a 21-13 record.
