Blake Jennings scored early, then
Ethan Dove added a late goal to give Wabash a 2-0 road victory Wednesday night at Wittenberg University.
The victory snapped a six-game losing streak for the Little Giants, including three consecutive overtime losses.
Jennings scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 10th minute with a blast that Tiger goalkeeper Jeff Mengerink was unable to corral. Wabash held the one-goal lead through the first half thanks to a pair of saves by goalkeeper
Matt Paul. The senior goaltender was even busier in the second period, turning aside eight more shots on net to finish with a total of 10 saves in the contest.
"We worked on some combination plays during the week and that's what produced the first goal," head coach
Chris Keller said. "
Ben Sia did a great job of finding Blake, who finished the play off with the goal.
"Give Wittenberg credit, they came right back and put together some good attacks. We defended strongly with good play from the back line."
The Little Giants clinged to a 1-0 advantage until the final five minutes of the match. That's when Dove broke free from the Wittenberg (5-11-2, 0-7-1 NCAC) defense and fired a shot under Mengerink to give Wabash the two-goal edge.
Jennings finished with two of the Little Giants' four shots on goal.
Jacob Nigh put a shot on net along with the goal by Dove.
"This was a good overall performance tonight," Keller said. "Now we get to look forward to Saturday."
Wabash (4-13, 2-6 NCAC) will honor the senior members of the soccer team prior to the season finale Saturday against Hiram College. The match at Mud Hollow Stadium begins at 2 p.m.
