The mission of the Wabash College Sports Medicine program is to provide the best medical care available to our student-athletes. The comfort and quality of service for the student-athlete is essential. This care includes evaluation, first aid, treatment, and rehabilitation of the student-athlete's condition.

The Wabash College Sports Medicine team approach is supported by the Student Health Center physician and nurse practitioners, Hendricks Regional Health Sports Medicine physicians and athletic trainers, and Shelbourne Knee Center orthopedic support.  In conjunction with the Kendall House Student Counseling Center, Wabash College Sports Medicine is ready to address the mental and psychological needs of our athletes as well.

Wabash College Athletics Health Care

You are required to have Primary Medical Insurance that covers you OUT OF STATE and UP TO $90,000 and covers intercollegiate sports injuries.

If any changes are made to your primary coverage, the Wabash College Student Health Center must be notified immediately with updated information and a copy of the FRONT and BACK of your insurance card.

If at any time during the academic year, you are no longer covered by your primary insurance policy at the minimum coverage level of $90,000 and out-of-state coverage, Wabash College will not be responsible for ANY financial obligations related to an athletic injury.

The following information outlines the insurance procedures for injuries suffered while participating in varsity athletics at Wabash College. It is important that all athletes and their parents read and understand the available coverage.

Coverage for expenses resulting from injuries suffered while participating in intercollegiate athletics at Wabash College is provided through a combination of:

  1. The student's personal insurance
  2. The college's athletic insurance policy
  3. The NCAA Catastrophic Insurance policy

1. Expenses incurred from an athletic injury must first be submitted to your personal or family insurance as primary. This policy must comply with the Affordable Care Act and NOT exclude injuries acquired during intercollegiate activities. Your primary plan must also cover you to at least $90,000.00 and cover you state to state. Medicaid and most HMO insurance plans do not do this. If you are out of network in our area, please attempt to change your coverage area to Crawfordsville or the Indianapolis area. Some HMO plans can extend the provider network coverage in our area for full-time college students.

It is extremely important to review your personal insurance regarding coverage availability in the Crawfordsville and Indianapolis area. If your personal insurance does not provide adequate network/provider coverage in the Crawfordsville area, we strongly encourage enrollment in another plan to avoid significant out-of-pocket expenses.

If you need help finding insurance, please visit http://www.wabash.edu/businessoffice/insurance or call Tori Gregory at 765-361-6202 for assistance.

2. Students participating in intercollegiate athletic activities are covered by an additional accident-only policy for injuries incurred during official practice or competition. This plan is an excess policy and will provide coverage once the student athlete's primary insurance has been applied and the $500 deductible is satisfied. For such claims, the student's family insurance plan is primary, and Wabash College's plan is secondary.

The intercollegiate secondary policy covers only injuries incurred while participating in official team practices or contests. Injuries suffered during out-of-season activities, such as "captain's practices," non-team related training exercises, recreational activities, etc., are the responsibility of the student athlete's primary plan.

Submission of the claim is the responsibility of the student-athlete. Claim forms are submitted to the Wabash College Athletic Training staff. Submission to our secondary insurance company will require the Explanation of Benefit (EOBs) from the primary insurance company and itemized bills from the provider.

DEPENDING ON YOUR PERSONAL INSURANCE COVERAGE, THE POSSIBILITY OF OUT-OF-POCKET EXPENSES DOES EXIST. THE STUDENT-ATHLETE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL EXPENSES, INCLUDING DEDUCTIBLES AND CO-PAYS UP TO THAT POINT. THE $500 DEDUCTIBLE IS PER INJURY AND NOT FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR.

3. In the unlikely event that a claim exceeds $90,000.00, the NCAA catastrophic policy should cover the remainder of the initial medical expenses.

Please be certain that you upload a CLEAR & ENLARGED copy of both the FRONT and BACK of your current insurance card to your PyraMED account, along with the other information requested. Student-athletes will not be permitted to participate in athletic related activity, including conditioning, etc., until all information is received and verified. Please contact the athletic training staff if you have any questions.

NCAA Post-Eligibility Insurance Program
The NCAA will now sponsor a post-eligibility insurance program that lasts two years after student-athletes leave school or voluntarily withdraw from athletics. The program will cover excess accident medical expenses for reported and properly documented athletically related injuries sustained during participation in an NCAA-qualifying intercollegiate sport. The policy has a $90,000 excess limit per injury with no deductible. Of this limit, $25,000 is available for mental health services related to an eligible, documented athletic injury. Enrollment in the program is automatic for student-athletes. The policy will be in effect after the student athlete's primary insurance coverage is exhausted or will not cover the accident medical expenses, subject to the terms and conditions of the policy. For more information about this policy, visit the NCAA Post-Eligibility Insurance Program website.
