The Wabash soccer team's record-setting start to the 2014 season hit its first bump in the road with a 2-0 loss Wednesday night at Ohio Wesleyan University.
Â
The Little Giants, who earned their first D3soccer.com ranking Tuesday with a 25th-place listing in addition to being ranked 16th by the National Soccer Coaches Association, set a school record of 12 consecutive matches without a loss prior to the Wednesday evening defeat.
Â
"We played a very good Ohio Wesleyan team tonight and they were clearly the better side in the game," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "We played some good periods within the game, but made a couple of mistakes that led to their two goals. That's going to happen from time to time during the season."
Â
The teams played even until OWU's Brian Schaefer scored in the 20th minute for what would prove to be the game-winning goal of the match. The Battling Bishops (10-3-1, 4-0 NCAC) added a final goal by Kyle Baum in the 48th minute.
Â
Wabash fired 10 shots in the match with two on net.
Blake Jennings led the offensive attack with three shots and one shot on goal. Ohio Wesleyan, ranked 21st by D3soccer.com, took 22 shots and 12 on goal. Little Giants goalkeeper
Dayton Jennings finished with a season-high 10 saves. Â
Â
"Dayton played well and made some amazing saves," Keller said. "Now we have to go back to the drawing board and get ready for Kenyon. The schedule certainly doesn't get any easier from this point forward."
Â
Wabash (10-1-2, 3-1 NCAC) returns home to face Kenyon College (12-0, 4-0 NCAC). The Lords are ranked second in the nation in both national polls. The match begins at 1 p.m. Wabash fans will honor the senior members of the Little Giants team prior to kickoff.
