Wabash earned its second straight road victory Saturday with a 69-35 win at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
Â
The Little Giants road a solid defensive effort to the win, holding IIT to 13-of-49 shooting (26.5 percent) from the field and 1-of-11 from three-point range (9.1 percent) for the game.
Â
Daniel Purvlicis recorded his second consecutive double-double, matching his totals Tuesday night at Boyce with another 18-point, 10-rebound performance.
Kyle Aiton added 12 points.
Â
Wabash trailed by four points early before going on an 8-1 run. The Scarlet Hawks answered to tie the game at 8-8 before Wabash went on 13-3 run over the next five minutes, capped by a put-back basket by
Marcus Kammrath. The Little Giants held IIT to six points over the final eight minutes of the first half, eventually taking a 25-19 lead to the locker room at halftime.
Â
Purvlicis opened the second half with a jumper that sparked a 26-0 start to the period. The Little Giants held IIT scoreless over a stretch of 10 minutes before Anders Bybjerg hit a jump shot to give the Scarlet Hawks (0-2) their first basket of the half. Wabash never allowed the advantage to drop below 22 points before taking the 34-point victory.
Â
Despite the win, the Little Giants still showed areas where improvement is needed.
Â
"As good as we were on Tuesday at following the plan (versus Boyce), we were not focused enough on the details to execute today," head coach
Kyle Brumett said. "Obviously that is a learned skill and this game will give us some specific examples along with areas to improve on. The good thing is that our guys knew that our focus was not good enough and that is a positive step.
Â
"It is really important that we as a team understand that the season is a long process. We want to be our best in February, so we have to get better each day. That is a mindset that we are working on."Â
Â
Â
One of those areas Brumett eluded to is free throw shooting. Wabash hit 6-of-15 tries from the line for a 40-percent mark.
Â
Â
Samuel Rarick was the sole source of offense for the Scarlet Hawks, scoring 31 of IIT's 35 points.
Â
Â
Wabash will play its home opener Tuesday evening with a 7:30 p.m. tip against North Central University of Minnesota
