Box Score The incredible start to the 2014 soccer season continued Sunday afternoon for the Wabash College squad. The Little Giants added another shutout in a 10-0 win at Eureka College.
Wabash tied the school record with its fifth victory to start the season, matching the 5-0 beginning set by the 1996 team. The school mark for consecutive games played to begin the season without suffering a loss came a decade earlier when the 1986 team tied Denison 1-1 to start the year before ripping off nine consecutive wins on the way to a 9-3-2 mark.
The ten goals tied the second-best effort by the Little Giants. Wabash defeated Franklin College 10-0 in the first match of the 1999 season. The highest goal total for a Little Giant soccer team came in a 14-1 win over St. Francis in 1973.
Francisco Trejo scored a hat trick with his three-goal effort against the Red Devils. Trejo scored back-to-back goals in the 31st minute before adding his final tally in the 37th minute. Wabash posted its first score in the 16th minute of a goal by
Mike Gore.
Zach Woloshin scored his second goal of the season, while
Ivaylo Mantchev notched his first of the year. Freshmen
Stojan Krsteski,
Austin Crosley, and
Gabe Murei each added their first college career goals.
Wabash outshot Eureka 43-1 for the match. Goalkeeper
Chase Francoeur picked up his second shutout of the season by making one save.
This was a great opporunity for our team," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "Scoring early as we did, it gave us a chance to rest some of our starters and give other guys who hadn't seen a lot of time on the field a chance to showcase what they can do and gain some valuable experience out there."
Wabash will try for win number six Wednesday afternoon when Hanover travels to Crawfordsville for a 4 p.m. match.
