Careless offense and poor defense at DePauw ended Wabash's four-game win streak Wednesday night. The Little Giants lost to their rival 75-58.
Wabash committed 14 turnovers in the contest. Those miscues led to 19 points for the Tigers.
"We just didn't do a good job," Coach
Kyle Brumett said. "I didn't do a good job and our players didn't do a god job."
DePauw wingman Luke Lattner scored 36 points to lead both teams in scoring. Lattner connected on six of his 10 three-point attempts while DePauw (11-5, 4-5 NCAC) shot 42.9 percent from behind the arc. Brumett noted that the Tigers entered the contest only shooting 29 percent from three-point range during North Coast Athletic Conference play which influenced his defensive game plan.
"The threes that they made behind the ball screens, those are on me," Brumett said. "It was my decision. Our players did a great job of following the plan, but the plan wasn't very good."
DePauw built an 11-point lead late in the first half, but a quick 7-0 Wabash run closed the score at 33-29 with 3:52 remaining. However, a Little Giant scoring drought for the rest of the half allowed the home team to rebuild an 11-point halftime lead, 40-29. Lattner converted two Wabash turnovers into layups on consecutive possessions in that span.
"We gave them some possessions where they scored it and we weren't able to guard them because the turnovers led right to baskets," Brumett said. "We can't turn it over like that. We're leading the league in turnover percentage and it's because of certain games, not because that's who we are every night."
Wabash (11-5, 6-3 NCAC) also struggled on the boards which is usually an area of strength. DePauw grabbed five more rebounds in the first half, including five offensive boards to Wabash's zero.
"DePauw did a great job collectively of keeping us off the offensive boards," Brumett said. "We had zero offensive rebounds at the half – that's not who we are."
The Tigers enjoyed a comfortable double-digit advantage for most of the second half. Lattner distributed his points, scoring 20 in the first half and 16 in the second. Guard Bradley Fey scored 15 for DePauw, including 3-of-7 from three. Tigers' big man Tommy Fernitz entered the contest a half rebound shy of averaging a double-double, but he was held in check with seven points and eight boards.
Kasey Oetting led Wabash in scoring. He totaled 15 points and hauled in nine boards. Forward
Daniel Purvlicis added 14 and six. The Little Giants finished the game shooting 40.4 percent from the field, but less than 30 percent from three.
Wabash begins the second half of the NCAC schedule Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest at Oberlin (6-10, 2-7 NCAC).Â
