Wabash stayed step for step with the eighth-ranked Kenyon College soccer team Saturday before losing 2-1 in double overtime in Gambier, Ohio on a penalty kick in the 103rd minute.
Â
Jeremiah Barnes scored his first goal of the year on the PK attempt after the Little Giants were called for hand ball in the box. The penalty kick was the second of the afternoon for the host Lords (15-1, 8-1 NCAC), ranked eighth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America national poll and winners of the North Coast Athletic Conference regular season championship. Wabash goalkeeper
Dayton Jennings picked up one of his nine saves with a stop in the 25th minute on an attempt by Kenyon.
Â
Wabash (11-5-2, 3-4-2 NCAC) took the lead in the 37th minute on
Nikola Kajmakoski's ninth goal of the season after Kenyon misplayed the ball near its own goal. The freshman led the Little Giants in scoring this season. The Lords responded less than a minute later when Woo Jeon found the back of the net for the seventh time this year.
Â
Jennings made four saves in each regulation period along with one in the first overtime. The Little Giants had one opportunity to score the game-winning goal in the first extra session, but a shot attempt by
Riley Pelton was saved by Sam Clougher. Wabash finished with three shots on goal in the match compared to 11 for Kenyon.
Wabash head coach
Chris Keller praised his team's effort in the season finale.
Â
"We played what was arguably our best game of the season," Keller said. "Our backs were against the wall in terms of getting into the conference tournament with a match against a nationally-ranked opponent, and we played well. We could have been up 3-1 at halftime. One shot hit the post and the keeper made a great save on another.
Â
"Unfortunately we got two penalty kicks called against us. Dayton made a save on the first attempt. It's just difficult to see a match and our season end on a penalty kick call. We played excellent soccer today. I'm already looking forward to next season with the whole group we get. We will definitely miss
Adam Antalis. He's been a great part of this program and is the first guy to play all four years for me. I'm really proud of him and of the way our team played today."
Â
Wabash finished the season in sixth place in the NCAC standings, one point behind fifth-place Denison and four points away from earning its second straight trip to the conference tournament.
