Three Little Giants scored in double figures Monday night in an 80-31 victory over Boyce College.
Â
Freshmen
Johnny Jager and
Evan Frank tallied 12 points apiece. Frank and
Marcus Kammrath each picked up a double-double, with Frank grabbing 10 boards. Kammrath finished with a game-high 12 rebounds and 10 points.
Â
Wabash (4-1) jumped out to a 12-0 lead over the first six minutes of the game before Mike Jones hit the first basket of the night for the Bulldogs (2-8). Jones led the team with 17 points.
Â
The Little Giants stretched their lead to as many as 25 points in the first half, shooting 12-of-27 from the field while converting seven offensive rebounds into seven points. The only down side on the stat sheet in the opening 20 minutes were nine turnovers, but the defense prevented Boyce from converting any of the miscues into points. Wabash committed only two turnovers in the second half to finish with 11 for the game.
"I'm happy with our effort tonight," Wabash head coach
Kyle Brumett said. "Boyce took Capital to overtime earlier this year and played Sewanee and Berea College to within ten points. Our guys did a really good job of following the scouting report. In those close games Ben Akers and Trey Stewart each hit five or six threes. Our guys did a great job of limiting their opportunities. That's about as good a job of following the game plan in a first half that I've had in any game."
Â
Wabash was able to play 13 players, including 10 freshmen. Each player picked up at least one point in the winning effort.
Â
"We're a young group," Brumett said. "Getting these guys opportunities is golden. Tonight we got an opportunity to coach them in a live game. All of the players have been working hard. They come and put the effort in at practice. It's nice to get them all in the game here in Chadwick and get the opportunity to play in front of the home crowd.
Â
"You never know how the season's going to go.
Zack Patton has missed a couple of games now. We have a couple of freshmen who haven't played yet because of injuries. Guys have to be ready when their number is called. That's an easy thing for a coach to tell them, but it's a really hard thing for a 17- or 18-year-old kid to prepare for. Tonight was a really good opportunity to throw those guys in there." Â
Â
Â
Kammrath shot 4-of-4 from the field to help the Little Giants finish 27-of-62 for the game (43.5 percent). Jager and
Austin Burton handed out four assists apiece as part of 17 total. Wabash players combined for a season-high 55 rebounds.
Â
Wabash returns to Chadwick Court Wednesday to open North Coast Athletic Conference play against Wittenberg University at 7:30 p.m.
