Lacrosse Home Opener Ends in Overtime Loss

A goal in the final minute of regulation by Zach Darabaris forced overtime between Wabash and Mount St. Joseph in the Little Giants' first home varsity lacrosse match in school history. The Lions won in OT 7-6 at Mud Hollow Stadium.

Wabash trailed most of the match, falling behind 2-0 at the outset before Zach Scarano tallied back-to-back goals in the second period to tie the match. A final goal of the second period by Mount St. Joseph and another in the opening seconds of the third reestablished the two-goal advantage. Dajon Thomas answered with a rocket from the top of the box for his second goal of the season and first of night.

Two more goals pushed the Lions' lead 6-3 before Thomas provided another answer for Wabash. The freshman blasted his second goal of the match with 7:13 left to play, then added a third for a hat trick at the 1:51 mark.

Needing a late goal to tie, the Little Giants got the ball on a faceoff attempt after Mount St. Joseph committed a violation. Wabash pushed for the attack before Darabaris cut from the left side and fired a one-hop shot by the goalkeeper to even the match and force the extra session.

Mount St. Joseph (1-3) won the overtime faceoff and worked for the eventual game-winning shot. The Lions' Drew Stoffer found John Ewing in front of the net for the sudden-death game winner with 2:48 remaining in the first overtime period.

Wabash outshot the Lions 39-26 and finished with 21 shots on goal compared to 11 for Mount St. Joseph. Darabaris recorded 10 shots and two ground balls. Thomas fired nine shots in the match, while Adrian Tejada added seven. Todd Hoogland recorded 11 saves in goal for the Little Giants.

The Little Giants (0-5) return to action Saturday with a 1 p.m. home contest against Calvin College.
