Late Rally Not Enough in Series Finale Loss

Wabash scored seven runs over the final two innings Sunday in its three-game series finale against Wooster, but came up short in a 14-10 loss in Chillicothe, Ohio.

The Little Giants tallied 10 runs on 13 hits, but surrendered 13 runs in the first six innings to the Scots for a lead that proved to be insurmountable. The Wooster win gave the series to the Scots, two games to one.

Wabash took an early lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. Lucas Stippler led off with a single to center and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. He scored one batter later when David Oliger ripped a double to center. Clint Scarborough followed with another double to bring Oliger home and provide the Little Giants with a 2-0 lead.

Wooster (20-4) tied the game with two runs in the second, which sparked the scoring run for the 17th-ranked Scots. Wooster picked up four more in the third, three in the fourth, and answered a Wabash run in the top half of the fifth with of run of its own in the bottom portion of the frame before adding three more in the sixth and a final run in the seventh.

The Little Giants run in the fifth came on a sacrifice fly by Oliger that scored Taylor Canter after the freshman reached base on an error to begin the inning.

Trailing 14-3, Wabash mounted its late inning rally. Oliger opened the eighth inning with a double, then scored on a error by the Scots on a ground ball by Scarborough. Tyler Owensby brought Scarborough home with a single to center. A ground out by freshman Cole Harlacher scored Owensby, and a two-out single by Stippler scored Andrew Rodgers, who reached base on a single earlier in the inning, to cap the four-run effort.

Oliger started the scoring attack in the ninth, reaching base after being hit by a pitch. Owensby moved him to second on a single to left. An error on a ball put in play by Harlacher loaded the bases with two outs. Tyler Hampton quickly unloaded them with a three-run double to left center to cut the lead to four. Michael Whitaker came on the for the Scots and recorded the final out of the game to end the Wabash threat.

Owensby paced the Wabash offense, going 3-for-5 at the plate. Hampton's three RBI led the Little Giants in that category. Michael Herrmann took the loss to fall to 3-2 for the year. Cody Cochran, Christian Vukas, and Cameron Glaze all pitched in relief.

Wabash (11-15) will travel to Gary, Indiana Tuesday to play North Central College at the U.S. Steelyard at 7 p.m. EDT.
