The Wabash baseball team concluded its North Coast Athletic Conference West Division schedule Monday with a doubleheader at Denison University. The Little Giants' late rally fell short in a 7-5 game one loss before falling 15-4 in game two.
Â
Wabash trailed 3-0 to the Big Red (17-16, 10-6 NCAC West) in game one before freshman
Cole Harlacher launched an RBI double to left to score
Andrew Rodgers in the second inning. After Denison retook the three-run lead in bottom frame, Wabash tied the game starting with a suicide squeeze bunt in the third by
Tanner Watson to score
Matt Spaulding before Spaulding singled home a run in the fourth. The game-tying RBI came with a bases-loaded suicide squeeze bunt by
Lucas Stippler with one out in the fourth.
Â
A three-run outburst by Denison in the fifth gave the Big Red the lead once again. Wabash rallied for a run in the final inning on a sacrifice fly by Watson and put the tying run on first. Denison brought in its closer, Connor Hanrahan, who picked up two strikeouts for his second save of the season to close out the game.
Â
David Oliger,
Tyler Owensby, and Spaulding each collected two hits.
Austin Hawn took the loss, working 4-1/3 innings while allowing six runs on nine hits with one strikeout.
Bryan Roberts gave up on run on three hits with one strikeout over 1-2/3 innings.
Â
The Little Giants fell behind early and never recovered in game two, surrendering 10 runs in the first three innings.
Christian Vukas drove home two runs with a double the left in the fourth, followed by an RBI single by
Clint Scarborough in the fifth and a run-scoring single by
Austin Ellingwood in the sixth. The Big Red exploded for five more runs in the seventh to provide the 11-run cushion.
Â
Scarborough went 4-for-4 from the plate in game two, including a double to give him 18 for the season. He holds the Wabash single-season record for two-base hits, breaking the mark the 16 set by David Seibel in 2011 in Sunday's doubleheader versus Denison. Stippler and Ellingwood each had two hits, as well.
Â
Michael Herrmann fell to 3-4 with the loss.
Cody Cochran and
Alan Corey worked in relief for the Little Giants, while
William Kelly held the Big Red scoreless over the final 1-1/3 innings on two hits.
Â
Wabash (12-23, 4-12 NCAC West) will close out the home portion of the 2015 season Thursday with a 4 p.m. contest against the University of Saint Francis. The Little Giants will most likely travel to Wooster this weekend to participate in the NCAC Cross-Over Series. Wabash will play a doubleheader Saturday, May 2 starting at noon and will play a third game Sunday, May 3 at noon. The winner of the three-game series will advance to the NCAC Tournament in Chillicothe, Ohio scheduled to take place May 7-9 at VA Memorial Stadium.
