After two goals by
Adam Antalis and a goal and a pair of assists by
Spase Dorsuleski, the Little Giants held of a late charge by Mount St. Joseph University to hang on to a 3-2 win Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Little Giants' first tally of the afternoon came from a free kick roughly ten yards on the attacking side of the midfield line in the 50
th minute. Dorsuleski lofted the ball into the box where Antalis waited at the back post. Wasting no time, Antalis deposited the ball into the back of the net with a header that had the goalkeeper beaten from the start.
Â
Wabash doubled their score line twenty-two minutes later when, after a
Geno James corner kick, Dosuleski found the goal with a header to give the Little Giants the 2-1 lead. Wabash got the eventual clincher ten minutes after their second when, in a play almost mirroring the first goal, Dosuleski found Antalis again at the back post on a bouncing ball for his second of the match.
Â
The Little Giants dominated the opening stretches of play. The best chance for either side coming in the fourteenth minute when a
Riley Pelton header beat the keeper but found the crossbar. Despite the early advantage to Wabash, Mount St. Joseph (4-2) opened the scoring on the afternoon with a 30
th-minute strike off the foot of Teddy Kerr. The Lions took the goal advantage into the break.
Â
"We had the control of the game, but after they scored that goal we transitioned to more of their style of play," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said of the first half. "I just told the guys don't play into their hand so we just maintained the same guys and the same tactics we've been doing all year and it played out."
Â
While down on the scoreboard early, the Little Giants dominated the second half.
Mount St. Joseph scored late to bring the margin back to one, but Wabash hung on in the closing stages to finish out the 3-2 win.
Â
"We played our game and stayed with it," said senior goalkeeper
Dayton Jennings, who had three saves in the match. "It was just like the Earlham game where we had to face adversity and try to fight through it. Luckily we did and came out on top."
Â
The win moved Wabash to 8-0 on the campaign, one game away from tying the school record for most consecutive wins in a season. The 1986 Wabash team rattled off nine straight victories midway through their campaign. The Little Giants will have a chance to tie that mark Saturday when they take on Allegheny at home.
Â
Wabash was paced in the shot department by
Nikola Kajmakoski who failed to find the net despite stellar play up front all afternoon. He had four shots on the day.
Mike Gore and Dorsuleski both had three shots in the contest. As a team, the Little Giants had seventeen total shots with seven of those coming on goal.
Â
Wabash has the next week off, a much-needed respite after three games in five days, before taking on Allegheny next Saturday. That game kicks off at 12 p.m. in Mud Hollow Stadium.
