Poor Shooting Halts Wabash Home Rally Vs. Kenyon

Three Wabash basketball players each scored 13 points in Saturday's home game against Kenyon, but could not lead the Little Giants to a win in an 80-75 final at Chadwick Court.

Daniel Purvlicis, Evan Frank, and Johnny Jager finished with 13 points apiece.

The game featured five ties and six lead changes. Kenyon (7-8, 4-4 NCAC) held a pair of five-point leads in the second half, but Wabash proved up to the task of drawing even each time.

Purvlicis gave the Little Giants a 63-61 lead with 6:43 remaining. The teams traded baskets over the next two minutes before the Lords' Tyler Kimble came up with a steal and hit a three-pointer at the offensive end of the floor to put Kenyon up 68-65 with 3:29 left.

Frank snared an offensive rebound --- one of his career-best 16 boards --- and scored a putback basket to bring the Little Giants to within one point. A pair of free throws extended Kenyon's lead to 70-67 at the 2:47 mark. Duncan Roy hit one of two free throws, which proved to be common theme for Wabash throughout the game as the team finished 19-of-31 from the line for the game.

Trailing by a point, Wabash appeared to have a chance to take late lead off a missed three by Kenyon, but the Lords recovered to drain a three-pointer after snaring the offensive rebound to move in front 73-68. Wabash cut the lead to three points with 15 seconds left to play on a pair of free throws from Ben Stachowski, but the Lords connected on 5-of-6 free throws in those closing seconds to hang on for the victory.

A tough shooting night and turnovers hurt Wabash throughout the game. The Little Giants finished 26-of-58 from the field (44.8 percent), including a 4-of-13 (30.8 percent) night from three-point range to go with the 61-percent free throw effort. Kenyon converted 17 Wabash turnovers into 18 points to go with 15 second-chance points despite being outrebounded by the Little Giants 47-35.

"We did a lot of good things to get to the free throw line," Wabash head coach Kyle Brumett said. "We shot 31 free throws and to not cash in, especially in such a close game, means we missed a chance to play with the lead. If a team sends you to the line 31 times you have to make them pay. We didn't do that today.

"It was just pretty woeful shooting in here today. I don't think there were a whole lot of excuses for it. We got some good looks. We didn't knock them in. In this league you have to shoot better than 44 percent from the field, 33 percent from the three-point line, and 60-percent from the free throw line. That just won't get it done."

Tim Connolly paced the Lords with 22 points. Brien Comey added 15 points, and Kimble chipped in 13.

Wabash (8-7, 2-6 NCAC) completes the first half of the North Coast Athletic Conference schedule Wednesday when the Little Giants face their arch-rival, DePauw University (6-9, 2-6 NCAC). Tipoff at Chadwick Court is set for 7:30 p.m.
