Wabash Takes Second In NCAC Standings After 2-2 Tie at OWU

Wabash stands in second place in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings through the first week of conference game after scoring a 2-2 tie at Ohio Wesleyan University Saturday evening.

The Little Giants trailed Ohio Wesleyan 1-0 at halftime after the 10th-ranked Battling Bishops (5-2-3, 0-0-2 NCAC) scored in the 21st minute off a rebound on a save attempt. Wabash took advantage of the same type of play in the 53rd minute when Nikola Kajmakoki notched his fifth goal of the season by knocking in a rebound off a shot attempt by Jacqes Boulais to even the match at 1-1.

Wabash took the lead in the 89th minute when Bayden Lee followed a loose rebound with his first goal of the season to provide a 2-1 lead for the Little Giants with 1:14 left in regulation. The Little Giants appeared poised for their first win in 24 matches against OWU until a foul call in the box away from the ball with six seconds remaining resulted in a penalty kick for Kyle Baum. The kick sailed into the goal, forcing overtime.

The Little Giants put two shot on goal in the two extra sessions but could not come up with the game-winning goal. Wabash keeper Dayton Jennings saved a shot by Ohio Wesleyan with a diving stop to preserve the tie and give the Little Giants one point in conference play.

"It was great to get a point on the road," Wabash head coach Chris Keller said. "We really played like warriors today. We rode out the storm in the first and second overtimes and played some great soccer. We took it to a very good Ohio Wesleyan team. We're happy to get the point but disappointed in the result. We played well enough to get the win but couldn't overcome some other factors that influenced the outcome."

Wabash fired 13 shots on goal in the match. led by three apiece from Kajmakoski and Mike Gore. Jenning finished with four saves out of six shots on goal for the Battling Bishops.

Oberlin sits atop the NCAC standings with six points, followed by Wabash (6-3-2, 1-0-1 NCAC) with four points. Kenyon, DePauw, Hiram, Wooster, and Allegheny are all tied for fourth place with three points.

Wabash has a week to prepare for its next conference match, a noon contest against NCAC leader Oberlin in Crawfordsville as part of the Little Giants' annual Homecoming celebration.
