Wabash Blanks OWU in 28-0 Win

The Wabash College defense turned in its second shutout of the season in a 28-0 win at Ohio Wesleyan Saturday afternoon.

The Little Giants limited OWU to 285 yards of total offense one week after the Bishops posted 568 yards in a win at DePauw. The Wabash offense scored four passing touchdowns by completing and efficient 12-of-17 passes for 137 yards.

"Kudos to our defense for getting the shutout today," Wabash head coach Don Morel said. "That just doesn't happen very often in college football, and especially not against a great offensive team like Ohio Wesleyan."

Wabash scored its first touchdown of the game on a lengthy drive that started at its own six yard line. The Little Giants took 17 plays and used 8:34 to march to end zone, using a couple of plays out of the back of the playbook. Senior wide receiver Drake Christen lined up at quarterback on a couple of plays of the series. Christen took a pitch from starting quarterback Connor Rice on the final play of the series, pulled up near the line of scrimmage and threw a four-yard TD pass to Oliver Page.

The Little Giants picked up two more scores in the second period on a 40-yard pass from Rice to Ryan Thomas and a three-yard throw from Rice to Dylan Buresh for his first career TD catch.

Rice added one more score in the third quarter with tight six-yard throw to page for the final TD of the game.

"Connor Rice has done a great job all season, but these last four games his statistics have been incredible," Morel said. "He's done an excellent job managing the game. That's really critical for us. Connor's just done a super job running the offense."

While the Wabash offense found success in its passing game, the Little Giant defense spent the day harassing Ohio Wesleyan quarterback Dominick Orsini. The senior set an OWU record for total offense last week and finished with the second-highest run total in Bishops' history. Wabash kept Orsini to 151 yards passing and 39 yards rushing on 13 attempts. He complete 19-of-36 passes, but was sacked three times and threw an interception. Connor Ludwig finished with 2-1/2 sacks for 15 yards with nine total tackles. Austin Brown led the Little Giants with 10 tackles and picked off the Wabash made eight tackles for losses totaling 24 yards, as well. He snared his 13th career interception, placing him fifth in Wabash career interceptions.

"We were happy to have Austin Brown back today," Morel said about his senior safety who missed the last game with a foot injury. "That guy really stands out on the field. We had most of our defense back and healthy. I though (defensive coordinator) Jeff Ramsey put together a great game plan and the players executed it well."

The shutout was the second of the season for Wabash. The Little Giants defeated Oberlin 51-0 in Crawfordsville October 8. Wabash blanked Ohio Wesleyan (4-4, 4-3 NCAC) four years ago by the identical score of 28-0 in 2012. Today's win was the 13th consecutive victory by the Little Giants over OWU.

The victory, combined with a 30-16 loss by previously unbeaten Denison in its game at DePauw University, moved Wabash into a tie for the North Coast Athletic Conference lead with two games remaining on the regular season schedule. The Little Giants travel to Denison next Saturday before returning home for the 123rd Monon Bell Classic November 12 against DePauw.
