A second-half goal by
Francisco Trejo drew Wabash to within one score of Oberlin with eight minutes left in regulation of Wednesday night's North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament semifinal match. The Little Giants were unable to find the equalizing goal, losing 2-1 to the second-seeded Yeomen.
Â
Wabash came out aggressive on offense, firing nine shots in the first half with three ending up on net. Oberlin goalkeeper Koryn Kraemer was equal to the task, turning aside all three shots by the Little Giants. The Yeomen took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when Nick Wertman picked up his 15th goal of the season. He gathered a cross through the box from teammate Trenton Bulucea before slipping a shot past Wabash senior goalkeeper
Dayton Jennings, who battled all night despite suffering a dislocated finger in practice Tuesday night prior to the team's departure for Oberlin.
Â
The score remained 1-0 through halftime before the Yeomen struck again in the 64th minute. Wertman tallied his 16th goal of the year. Bulucea provided the initial pass to Timothy Williams. Williams placed his pass at the feet of Wertman who fired the shot into the net for a 2-0 Oberlin lead.
Â
The Little Giants stayed on the attack.
Stojan Krsteski found Trejo near the top of the box to set up the Wabash goal. Trejo worked his way past the defense, beat the keeper before kicking the ball into the back of the empty net in the 82nd minute to cut the lead to 2-1.
Â
Wabash put two shots on goal in the final period but could not tie the match. The Little Giants outshot Oberlin 15-12 with both teams recording five shots on goal. Trejo led Wabash offensively with five total shots and three attempts on goal.
Nikola Kajmakoski and
Cory Sims also put shots on frame for the Little Giants.
Â
Jennings finished with five saves in his final game in goal for Wabash.
Â
"We played a tremendous game," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "We showed grit and heart. We managed 15 shots but could not finish them. I give Oberlin a lot of credit. They are a great side."
Â
We had a great conference run and could not be more proud of everyone, especially the seniors. Jennings,
Geno James,
Rodrigo Porras, and
Riley Pelton came in as freshman when the program was in the building phase. They laid the foundation of Wabash soccer, starting with only four wins as freshman to rattle off 35 wins the next three seasons. They have established a winning culture that has us looking forward to next season already."
Â
The Little Giants earned a berth in this year's tournament as the three seed with a 6-2-1 record in NCAC matches. Wabash earned its first tournament appearance in 2014.
