The Wabash lacrosse team opened its second varsity season with a 14-13 double-overtime loss to Calvin College in a game played in Kalamazoo, Michigan Saturday.
Â
The Little Giants opened with a 2-0 lead off goals from
Austin Crosley and
Collin Brennan, who scored his first career goal in a man advantage situation. Calvin ripped off three consecutive scores to take the lead until freshman
Steven Stark drew Wabash even with a goal off an assist from
Zach Scarano.
Â
Calvin (2-1) added two more scores in the second period to move in front 5-3 before the Wabash offense took over. Crosley brought the Little Giants to within one prior to a
Spencer Sikes goal with 2:16 left in the first half to even the game at 5-5 at the break.
Â
Colin Corcoran scored two minutes into the third period to put Wabash in front. The two teams traded goals throughout the third period and start of the fourth before the Knights threw three straight into the net to take a 12-10 lead with less than nine minutes remaining in the game. Corcoran and Sikes notched goals to bring Wabash even before Stark gave the Little Giants a lead with 2:04 left to play.
Â
Last year Wabash scored with 11 seconds remaining versus Calvin to produce an 11-10 victory. This year the Knights came up with a goal with 47 second left to tie the game at 13-13 to force overtime.
Â
Neither team produced a game-winner in the first session, but Nate Ray took a pass from Chris Griffin in the second extra period to score the final tally with 59 seconds remaining.
Â
Stark and Crosley each finished with three goals, while Sikes and Corcoran each added two. Tucker Dison,
Billy Bernhardt, and Brennan had one goal apiece. Stark also provided three assists, while Dixon added two helpers.
Â
Samuel Steward faced 33 shots in his first start at goalkeeper and recorded 11 saves in 67:01 minutes.
Â
Wabash dominated the faceoff dot, winning 24-of-32 chances. The Little Giants recorded 27 shots on goal against a physical Calvin squad, with Wabash finishing 4-of-9 in extra-man situations. The Knights were whistled for a total of nine penalties while Wabash committed only two.
