Andrew Roginski homered to give Wabash an early lead Tuesday but an eighth-inning rally gave Eastern Nazarene College a 9-6 win in the Little Giants' third baseball game of their Florida spring break trip.
Â
The Little Giants opened the game with a three-run first inning when Roginski launched pitch over the left field fence for his first career home run, scoring
Jared Wolfe and
Cole Harlacher. Eastern Nazarene (3-3) answered with a two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Little Giants' lead to 3-2. The Lions added another two-run shot in the bottom of the second, then tacked on a pair of runs to move in front 6-3.
Â
Wabash drew to within a run in the third. Harlacher reached base on a one-out error by the Lions, then stole second with two outs.
KJ Zelenika kept the inning alive when he reached base on an error while Harlacher hustled to third. After a stolen base by Zelenika,
Tyler Downing continued the rally with an RBI single down the left field line.
Taylor Canter capped the rally with an RBI single through the left side to make it a 6-5 ballgame.
Â
The Little Giants tied the game an inning later when
Sean Roginski doubled to left field to open the inning. Wolfe hit behind the runner, advancing Roginski to third. Senior
David Oliger delivered a single through the left side for his sixth RBI of the season.
Â
After an early offensive explosion, the pitchers took over throughout the next four innings. Wabash starter
Michael Herrmann held ENC to five hits and no runs from the third inning through the seventh to keep the Little Giants in the game. Wabash was held in check by Lions reliever Ragan Cole, who surrendered only four hits and one walk through 3-2/3 innings.
Â
Eastern Nazarene broke through in the eighth, plating three runs against Herrmann and reliever
Connor Smith. Herrmann pitched 7-1/3 innings, giving up 11 hits and four earned runs with two walks and three strikeouts. Smith was charged with one run on one hit with a hit batsman in 2/3 of an inning of work.
Â
The Little Giants mounted one more rally in the ninth.
Andrew Roginski started with a leadoff walk. Zelenika followed with a single to left. After the Lions retired the next two batters, Wabash turned to -pinch hitter
Zach Leander, who launched a shot to left-center field, only to see Jose Arebalo make a diving catch to hold the Little Giants scoreless in the inning and end the game.
Â
Herrmann fell to 1-1 with the loss. Canter paced the offense for Wabash with three hits.
Andrew Roginski, Zelenika, and Downing added two hits apiece.
Â
Wabash (3-6) will take Wednesday off before returning to diamond Thursday at 3 p.m. against Defiance College.
