A goal from Zach Schoffstall in the final seven seconds of double overtime handed Wabash a 2-1 loss on Sunday' final day of the Robbie Dreher Soccer Classic.
Â
Cory Sims provided the early lead for Wabash, slamming a shot into the left corner of the net for his first goal of the season in the 22
nd minute. The Little Giants held the 1-0 lead through halftime until Carthage (4-2-0) tied the game on a goal from Leo Mendoza.
Â
The teams played even through the first ten-minute overtime and appeared headed to a draw until Schoffstall struck with the game winner in the closing seconds for the 23
rd-ranked Red Men.
Â
"I was very pleased with the way the game was going," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "We probably played our best 60 minutes of soccer. Unfortunately we went down a man on a tough red card issued to
Max Rowley. That put us 10-vs-11 against a very good NCAA Tournament team the advanced far into the 2015 tournament.
Â
"I'm proud proud of the team for the work rate when we were down a player. We were just unlucky to get a goal scored against us with seven seconds left in the match."
Â
Sims finished with two shots on goal for Wabash.
Abdoulie Waggeh and Spase Dursuleski each added one. Little Giants goalkeeper
Dayton Jennings saved three of the five shots he faced.
Â
Wabash (1-3-1) travels to Terre Haute Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
