Wabash erased an early Oberlin lead with a 16-6 run to close out the first half and held on to earn a 58-48 North Coast Athletic Conference road win.
Wabash held the Yeomen without a three-point basket in the first half and 4-of-19 from behind the arc for the game. Oberlin shot 18-of-50 from the field overall for 36 percent.
The Little Giants owned a 39-26 rebounding edge, grabbing 12 offensive boards.
Logan White led the Little Giants with 15 points and 13 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. The biggest contribution in the game may have come from sophomore
Dalton Vachon, who finished with one point, five boards, an assist, and a blocked shot.
Vachon came off the bench after freshman
Harrison Hallstrom drew two early fouls. Vachon grabbed a rebound in the opening period to keep an offensive series alive for the Little Giants. He finished with three offensive boards in the game. Vachon drew a pair of charges on Oberlin (1-11, 0-5 NCAC) in the second half to limit the Yeomen comeback effort.
"Dalton has been a big bright spot over the last six game," Wabash head coach
Kyle Brumett said. "He' gotten a little bit more time. You can see him playing with more confidence. He is part of the reason we've been able to continue to improve defensively. Dalton was key in our four-game win streak. I thought he played great in our game against Allegheny Wednesday even though we didn't come out with the win, and he was outstanding again today."
Wabash trailed 8-4 when
Colten Garland connected on back-to-back baskets as part of his 14-point effort.
Ben Stachowski followed with a three-pointer from the corner to give the Little Giants their first lead of the game. The two teams exchanged the lead over the next four minutes before
CJ McMann knocked down a three-point to five Wabash a 17-14 advantage. The Little Giants extended their lead to 29-20 at the break behind 12 points from Garland and nine from White.
Hallstrom returned from his early foul trouble to help push the Little Giants' lead to 12 points two of his 14 second-half points with 12:54 left to play in the game. Oberlin began to mount a rally thanks to its full court press and three-point shooting by Jack Poyle and Joshua Friedkin. The duo combined to hit 4-of-8 three-point tries to go with seven Wabash turnovers to trim the lead to two points with 6:43 remaining. Hallstrom hit three out of four free throws to go with a
Duncan Roy three-pointer to put the Little Giants back in front 48-40 with 5:27 left on the game clock. The Yeomen drew no closer than five points before Wabash (7-6, 3-3 NCAC) made its final six free throw attempts to secure the win.
"This is such a young group and you try as a coach to prepare them for the bounce back from a loss," Brumett said. "This is arguably our toughest trip of the year. We've struggled here. The loss at home Wednesday to Allegheny put us in a bit of a tough spot. After you win a few in a row you really have your mind set to continue that at home. Then you have that hiccup Wednesday.
"We were able to play within our defensive identity today against Oberlin. I would like to be a little bit better offensively, but I'm not sure this group is quite ready for that yet. We've got to keep working on finding ways to get easy baskets and to be smoother in moving the ball and getting the baskets we want. But we were able to get to the free throw line today and knock those shots in. You could see our guys knew this was a big game for us. It was nice to see them step up and have guys make plays."
Garland and Hallstrom each scored 14 points in the winning effort. McMann added a career- best eight points. Stachowski chipped in three points and seven rebounds.
Jack Poyle scored 16 points for Oberlin.
Wabash travels to Wittenberg University Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m.contest.
