Rushing Attack Leads Wabash To Win At Oberlin

Wabash rushed for 361 yards and three touchdowns to capture a 35-21 victory at Oberlin College.

The Little Giants ran 49 times, including 14 times on the final offensive drive of the game --- a clock-devouring 17-play, 76-yard drive that took 9:41 to execute and culminated in a 3-yard touchdown run by Isaac Avant.

Ike James paced the ground attack with 206 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries. He became the 11th player in Wabash football history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season, increasing his totals to 1,031 yards through seven games. James' total yards against Oberlin marked the second time this season he eclipsed the 200-yard mark in rushing. He ran for 238 yards against Albion in the season opener.

Avant added a career-best 136-yard effort with the one touchdown on 14 carries. It was the second time this season both James and Avant topped 100 yards in the same game. The duo also produced the two longest plays from scrimmage for Wabash this season. James broke a 78-yard run in the second quarter to set up his own 6-yard touchdown run to tie the score at 14-14. Avant raced 77 yards down the sidelines later in the second period on a drive that ended with a James 3-yard score to put Wabash up 21-14.

The Little Giants trailed from the outset. Oberlin scored on its second play from scrimmage when quarterback Zach Taylor connected with Matthew Bullock on a 77-yard catch and run. Weston Murphy hit tight end Dylan Buresh with a 6-yard touchdown pass on the ensuing offensive drive for Wabash to tie the score at 7-7. Taylor broke free on a 28-yard run up the middle to answer for Oberlin (2-5, 1-5 NCAC) for a 14-7 lead.

The Wabash defense surrendered 143 yards in the first quarter but made adjustments to lock down the Yeomen in the second and third periods. Oberlin was limited to 16 plays and 28 yards of offense in the second quarter while the Little Giants produced 208 yards of offense on 17 plays.

The two James' TDs in the second quarter gave Wabash a 21-14 lead at halftime. The Little Giants added a defensive score in the fourth quarter to expand their lead. One play after a James fumble was recovered by Oberlin at the Yeomen's 40 yard line, Henry Webberhunt sacked Taylor and knocked the football free. Luke Kseniak picked up the ball and ran 32 yards for a touchdown and a 28-14 Wabash lead.

The touchdown proved important a few minutes later when Oberlin scored on a 50-yard pass from Taylor to Corey Fussinger to trim the Little Giants' advantage back to seven points.

Wabash took the Oberlin kickoff after the score and began its 17-play march across the Knowlton Complex field, eventually scoring on the Avant 3-yard run to provide the final score of the game.

Senior Brian Parks provided the final big plays for the defense. After Evan Hansen opened the next drive with a sack of Taylor, the Yeomen moved the football out toward midfield. Parks gathered himself after a cut block by Oberlin's running back and recorded the sixth sack of the game for Wabash of Taylor. Two plays later Parks picked off Taylor's final pass of the game to end the game and secure the victory for the Little Giants.

"We are just a nasty football team," Wabash head coach Don Morel said. "But we are 6-1 and we still have a chance to play for a conference championship. But we will have to play much better against Wittenberg. It's the same story ever week and I think it's just going to be a situation where every game we play is going to be decided by one touchdown or a field goal. We've got to build around that as we figure out a way to play Wittenberg this week."

Hansen recorded 15 tackles to set a new personal single-game high mark after making 14 last weekend versus Ohio Wesleyan. The Little Giants forced three turnovers as Leon Ivy also knocked a ball free for a fumble recovered by Ahmaud Hill.

Murphy finished 15-of-23 passing for 98 yards and one TD with one interception. Two of his completions came on passes to Ra'shawn Jones and Ivan Martinez on the final 17-play drive, with both throws ending in first downs. Jones caught four passes for 32 yards to lead the Wabash receiving corps.

Taylor was 16-for-26 passing for 251 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.

Wabash (6-1, 5-1 NCAC) faces conference leader, undefeated Wittenberg University next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hollett Little Giant Stadium. The Tigers defeated DePauw University 52-6 in Greencastle.
