Wabash Opens NCAC Play With Road Win Over 25th-Ranked Wooster

Wabash opened the North Coast Athletic Conference portion of its season Saturday with a 85-72 road victory at the College of Wooster. Five Little Giants scored in double figures to provide the victory against the 25th-ranked Fighting Scots.

Sophomore Alex Eberhard led the way for Wabash (2-2, 1-0 NCAC) with a career-best 20 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. He added 10-of-11 shots from the free throw line, part of an 18-for-21 effort for the Little Giants in just their fourth win at Wooster (3-3, 1-2 NCAC) in school history and first at Timken Gymnasium since a 69-68 overtime win 2011.

Wabash scored 13 points off nine Wooster turnovers while give the ball to the Scots only five times on turnovers. The Little Giants maintained a 36-36 tie at halftime after leading by seven points on two different occasions in the first half. Wabash came out red hot from the field in the second half, connecting on 17-of-34 shots over the final 20 minutes for 50 percent. The Little Giants finished 30-69 for the game (43.5 percent) while Wooster shot 30-of-74 overall (40.5 percent).

Wabash trailed by three points with 13 minutes remaining in the game before going on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to regain the lead it would not relinquish. The Scots drew as close as a point  before the Little Giants closed out the game with six made free throws down the stretch to earn the key win in an early conference meeting on the road.

Jack Davidson finished with 17 points. Harrison Hallstrom collected 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Connor Rotterman tallied 13 points and Parker Manges added 11 points. Six of Hallstrom's 11 boards came on the offensive end of the floor. Spencer Williams led the Scots with 18 points. Danyon Hempy scored 16 points. Alex Baptiste was the leading rebounder for Wooster with 14.

"This is a great win for our program," Wabash head coach Kyle Brumett said. "Obviously we have to keep winning, but none of our players or staff had ever won at Wooster prior to today. Wooster is the standard in the conference. Our young guys went in with no fear.

"Eberhard and Hallstrom set the tone around the basket and Davidson, Rotterman, and Manges made winning plays throughout. We struggled to keep Wooster off the offensive boards in the first half, but adjusted down the stretch. The fact we could play without turning the ball over was huge for our team."

Wabash returns to Chadwick Court for its conference home opener against defending league champion Ohio Wesleyan University. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.

"Wednesday is a huge game for us, but we are going to enjoy the next 48 hours," Brumett said.
