Wabash Wins At Allegheny For Weekend Series Sweep

Wabash completed a weekend sweep of North Coast Athletic Conference games Saturday afternoon with a 68-63 victory at Allegheny College after taking a 70-64 win at Hiram College Friday evening.

The Little Giants erased a seven-point, first-half road deficit by outscoring the Gators  11-5 over the final seven minutes of the opening period to take a 38-31 lead at the break. Allegheny (7-14, 4-10 NCAC) regained its lead with a 14-3 run to open the second half, holding Wabash (10-11, 6-8 NCAC) without a basket for the first 6-1/2 minutes of the closing period.

Joey Lenkey cut the Gators' lead to one point with a driving layup before Zach Patton's two free throws provided a 47-46 Wabash lead. The teams traded baskets over the next seven minutes before the Little Giants sparked their final drive to victory.

Logan White hit two free throws to first tie the game for the 11th time, then give Wabash the 58-57 lead. Colten Garland followed with a three-point basket to move the advantage to four points with 5:24 left in the game. Garland stepped inside the arc and hit another jumper two possessions later for a six-point advantage. Allegheny got as close as four points with 2:19 remaining, but the Little Giants connected on five free throws and held the Gators to one basket in the closing stretch to claim the five-point victory and avenge an earlier home loss to Allegheny to split the season series.

"This is huge for us," Wabash head coach Kyle Brumett said. "We've had an up-and-down stretch since the new year began. January was a month of highs and lows. Our guys have continued to try and get better. They need some rewards for the hard work they're putting in. The two wins this weekend are a big part of that reward. The effort we got this weekend is what it takes to win in the conference.

"I told the team in the locker room after the win at Hiram that you have to be in that position in a close ballgame to get better at playing in that position. In the last stretch of games we haven't really been ahead at the end or be close enough to claw to get back in it. I feel like finishing with the win Friday gave us some confidence going in to today's game. We got such a big lift this weekend from Zack Patton, Joey Lenkey, and Dalton Vachon. Their roles are continuing to grow. Zack has battled injuries and hasn't been in the lineup probably as much as he would like to be. He just kept coming every day and has improved. We needed some leadership and some 'effort' plays, and he brought them this weekend."

Garland led Wabash with 21 points, scoring 16 in the first half to keep the Little Giants in the game. The freshman played all 80 minutes in two games for Wabash this weekend. White tacked on his eighth double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds after finishing with 16 points and 17 boards Friday night at Hiram. Patton tied his career-best mark with 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. Lenkey added a career-best eight points in the victory.

Jordan Rawls paced Allegheny with 20 points. Conor Macomber scored 16 points, and Evan Zabriski came off the bench to tally 15.

"A weekend like this helps us get better at understanding the roles within this team and learning about who we are as a team," Brumett said. "We're going to need Colten and Logan to give us stability at the top end of our offense. We're going to need a group of guys to be willing to jump in and pick us up at different points. We're still figuring this group out. It's important to me that we're a group that is still improving, still trying to play their best in February."
Wabash prepares for its final four games of the regular season, beginning with a Wednesday night home contest against Wittenberg University at 7:30 p.m. at Chadwick Court.
