Defense Dominates In Wabash Win Over Denison

Wabash held Denison to its lowest point total since the 2012-2013 season in a 63-46 win by the Little Giants at Chadwick Court Saturday afternoon.

Wabash (7-8, 3-5 NCAC) limited the Big Red (8-7, 4-4 NCAC) to 24 points in the first half and 22 in the second on 17-of-58 shooting from the field (29.3 percent). The 22 points is the fewest allowed by Wabash in a half this season, eclipsing the mark of 23 points scored by the University of Chicago and by Oberlin in the first half of games earlier this year. The 46 total points allowed is the lowest total by Wabash since its 80-31 win over Boyce College at home in the 2015-16 season. The total is the fewest points scored by a Denison squad since its 77-35 loss to Catholic University as part of the 2012-2013 season.

For all of the final defensive numbers, Wabash needed to rally from an early deficit. The Little Giants got off to a slow start, trailing 8-0 in the first three minutes of the game. Harrison Hallstrom put Wabash on the scoreboard with a layup to start a 12-4 run over the next five minutes to tie the game at 12-12.

The two teams matched baskets over the next six minutes with Wabash taking a one-point lead at 23-22 on a Hallstrom jumper in the paint. That basket began a 9-0 run to give the Little Giants a 30-22 advantage. Hallstrom closed out the half with a basket and free throw to put Wabash in front 33-24 at the break.

Denison scored three baskets, including a three-pointer from Claude Chandonnet, in the opening two minutes of the second half with only a basket by Alex Eberhard for a response from the Little Giants. With the lead cut to 35-31, the Wabash defense clamped down for the remainder of the contest. Wabash held the Big Red to four baskets over the final 18 minutes of the game to earn the 17-point victory. The Big Red shot 7-of-28 from the field, including a 3-of-16 effort from three-point range, over the final 20 minutes of the game. The shooting woes carried over the free throw line for Denison, as well. The Big Red hit 5-of-10 from the line in the second period, going 5-of-11 from the stripe for the game.

Wabash controlled the glass throughout the game, outrebounding the Big Red 47-35. Hallstrom led the way with 10 rebounds to go with a game-high 15 points for his fourth double-double of the season. Wabash dominated the paint on offense. Wabash outscored Denison 32-16 in the paint and scored 14 points on 13 offensive rebounds. Eberhard scored 15 points and eight rebounds, while freshman guard Jack Davidson picked up 10 points.

The Little Giants shot 23-of-58 from the field for 39.7 percent. Wabash connected on 7-of-27 three-point attempts (25.9 percent) and were 10-of-12 from the free throw line (83.3 percent).

Maxwell Siwik led Denison with 14 points. Garrett Collier tallied ten points.

Both teams played the game without a full bench. Regulars Logan White, Rhett Helt, and Dalton Vachon were unavailable for Wabash, while North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week Jack Coulter was missing from the lineup for the Big Red.

Wabash concludes the first half of the NCAC schedule on Wednesday when the Little Giants travel to Greencastle for a 7:30 p.m. contest against DePauw University.
