Wabash Wins Overtime Thriller At Wittenberg

Jake Page intercepted a Jake Kennedy pass in overtime to give Wabash a 28-21 victory at 11th-ranked Wittenberg Saturday afternoon and move the Little Giants into a three-way tie for the lead in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings.

Page picked off two passes in the game, part of three interceptions over for Wabash (7-1, 6-1 NCAC). The Little Giants held a 21-14 lead heading into the final minutes of the regulation before Wittenberg (7-1, 6-1 NCAC) scored on the final play of the fourth quarter on a touchdown pass from Kennedy to Liam Duncan.

Wabash started on offense in the overtime period with quarterback Jake Reid connecting with Matt Penola for a 15-yard completion on the first play. Junior running back Isaac Avant raced ten yards for the eventual winning score to put the Little Giants in front. Wittenberg took over on its offensive series and went to the air on second-and-ten from the 25 yard line. Kennedy threw to the end zone, but Jake Page hauled in his second interception of the game and team-leading fourth of the season to end the game at 28-21.

The win was the first for the visiting Little Giants at Wittenberg since a 27-24 victory over the Tigers in 2012. The losses ended a 21-game regular season winning streak for Wittenberg.

Wittenberg took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, capping a 16-play, 84-yard drive with a Nick Kendall 17-yard run. The Tigers came into the game outscoring their opponents 111-26 in the second quarter, but on Saturday it was Wabash controlling the second 15 minutes of play. The Little Giants scored twice --- once on an 11-yard pass from Reid to Oliver Page to tie the game at 7-7. Wabash closed out the first half with a 13-play, 80-yard drive that concluded with Avant diving over the pile from a yard out to provide a 14-7 lead at the break.

After a scoreless third quarter where the defenses limited offensive production to a combined 78 yards of total offense between the two teams, Wittenberg rallied for a score with six minutes remaining in regulation. Senior wide out Jeff Tiffner took a pitch from Kendall and tossed the football into the end zone to Kennedy on the trick play to even the score at 14-14. Wabash responded with a 10-play drive, marching 73 yards over the course of the next 4:49 before Reid found a wide open Oliver Page for a 20-yard touchdown and a 21-14 Little Giants' lead.

Wittenberg rallied for the game-tying score in the final 1:18 of regulation. The Tigers moved 61 yards over the course of nine plays, moving the football to the nine yard line with two seconds showing on the fourth-quarter clock. Kennedy found Liam Duncan in the back of the end zone with the nine-yard pass to tie the game at 21-21 and send the contest to overtime.

Jackson Garrett, the NCAC Defensive Player of the Week after his performance for Wabash versus Oberlin, led the defense with 11 tackles and made the third interception of Kennedy. The Wittenberg quarterback started the day with only four interceptions on the season before tossing three Saturday. Jake Page added nine tackles. The Little Giants posted seven tackles for losses totaling 20 yards, including 2-1/2 by Brandon Yeagy for a total of 11 yards.

Reid threw for 208 yards and two TDs on 16-of-28 passing. Oliver Page caught a team-high nine passes for 94 yards. Avant ran the ball 20 times for 70 yards.

Kennedy finished the day 28-of-49 passing for 232 yards and one TD. Tiffner made ten receptions for 58 yards. Kendall was the leading ground gainer for the Tigers with 84 yards and a score on 16 carries.

The victory moves Wabash into a three-way tie with Wittenberg and Denison for the NCAC lead all with 6-1 conference records. Wabash closes out the regular season with two home games over the next 14 days, beginning with a contest versus Allegheny on Saturday, November 3 at 1 p.m. at Hollett Little Giant Stadium.
