David Riggs drew Wabash even with Wooster with his third goal of the season Saturday to help the Little Giants to a 1-1 tie on the road. The split earned Wabash one of four spots in next week's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.
Â
Wabash (12-3-3, 5-2-2 NCAC) was called for a foul in the penalty box in the 38
th minute. Wooster (8-6-3, 4-3-2 NCAC) capitalized on the ensuing penalty kick as Ousmane Sy deposited the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead for the host Scots.
Â
Riggs responded two minutes later with the equalizer. He gathered a rebound off a blocked shot attempt by
Corbin Kaiser and scored in the 40
th minute to tie the match. Wooster outshot the visiting Little Giants in the second half 6-3 but neither team was able to put a shot in the net. Wabash put two shots on goal in the first overtime period but was unable to score.
Â
"We played a really tough opponent in Wooster today," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "We did a good job as a team today in some really difficult field conditions today. The footing was terrible in the mud and it was a dog fight. I'm proud of our players and how they recovered after we gave up the goal on a penalty kick. We came right back and scored an equalizer and had a few chances in the second half and even in overtime to get the win."
Â
Wooster outshot Wabash 14-9 for the game. Both teams finished with four shots on goal.
Chad Wunderlich made three saves in goal for the Little Giants, as did Will Collis for Wooster.
Â
"In the end we did what we needed to do to get a point. We would have loved to have gotten all three points for a win, however one point was all we needed to secure another trip to the conference tournament. I'm really proud of this group. We have so many young players in the lineup helping us maintain our level after losing so many good leaders over the past two years. It speaks volumes about the gentlemen in this program. We're excited to be in the postseason but we're not done yet."
Â
Wabash will travel to Kenyon to face the Lords in the NCAC Tournament semifinals as the four seed. The Little Giants tied with Denison for third place in the final conference standings, but lost the tiebreaker to the Big Red. Wednesday's semifinal match against top-seeded Kenyon begins at 2:30 p.m.
