Little Giants Silenced In 34-10 Loss at Denison

A Wabash College offense that entered Saturday's North Coast Athletic Conference football game ranked 23rd in Division III was held to 339 total yards in it 34-10 loss at Denison University.

The Little Giants (4-1, 3-1 NCAC) came into the game averaging 480.8 yards of offense, including a 300.5 yards-per-game average in the running game. The Big Red (3-2, 3-1 NCAC) stymied Wabash all afternoon, holding the Little Giants to 265 yards of offense in the game before Wabash found the end zone on a 74-yard touchdown pass from Jake Reid to Ra'Shawn Jones in the final minute of the game down 34-3.

The loss was the first by Wabash against Denison since the Little Giants joined the NCAC in 2000. The Little Giants had won 17 consecutive games dating back to 1991.

While Denison's defense held Wabash in check, its offense kept control of the football throughout the contest. The Big Red entered the game as the number one team in the NCAC in time of possession and held true to form, running 79 plays for 491 yards of offense over the course of 40 minutes of possession.

Canaan Gebele, the senior quarterback for the Big Red, became the team's all-time leading passer after finishing the game with 302 passing yards against Wabash. He completed 26-of-36 attempts and threw three TD passes.

The Big Red took advantage of four Wabash turnovers, converting three giveaways into 17 points. A fumble in the first quarter led to a one-yard TD pass from Gebele to CJ Davis for a 7-0 Denison lead. The Big Red marched 94 yards in 17 plays before scoring on a 12-yard touchdown pass to David Weimer to push the lead to 14-0 in the second period.

Denison added a late score in the third period on a six-yard pass from Gebele to Hunter Biddle for a 21-0 lead. After a Pat Kramer 32-yard field goal made the score 24-0, Denison added a touchdown and field goal after a pair of Wabash interceptions to cruise to a 34-0 lead 4:44 remaining in the game.

Wabash got on the scoreboard with 2:09 remaining in the contest when Schuyler Nehrig connected on a 39-yard field goal at the end of a seven-play, 46-yard drive. Reid connected with Jones for the 74-yard scoring pass on the next Wabash possession for the Little Giants' only trip to the end zone. The last time Wabash had been held to a single touchdown in an NCAC game was last season when the Little Giants lost 16-13 to Ohio Wesleyan at home.

Matt Penola led the Wabash rushing game with 62 yards on nine attempts. Isaac Avant ran for 58 yards in eight attempts. Austin Hoover added 51 rushing yards on eight carries.

Alex Minton ran for 126 yards in 18 rushing attempts for Denison.

Wabash will look to regroup when it returns to the road next Saturday for a 1 p.m. game at Ohio Wesleyan.
