Wabash improved to 10-0 on the season with a 5-0 record in North Coast Athletic Conference games thanks to an impressive 102-61 win at home over Hiram Friday afternoon.
Â
The victory also provided Wabash head coach
Kyle Brumett the 200th win of his career. Brumett, in his fifth season at the helm of the Little Giants' program with a record of 64-51, is now 200-130 in 13 years as a head coach.
Â
The 21st-ranked Little Giants got off to a slow start against the Terriers (5-6, 3-2 NCAC), falling behind 8-3 over the first four minutes of the game before eventually taking a 12-11 on three free throws by sophomore
Jack Davidson at the 12:38 mark of the opening period. Sherman Dean III answered with a three-point basket for Hiram before
Harrison Hallstrom's layup tied the game at 14-14.
Â
With the score tied at 16-16 at the 10:43 mark of the first half, the Little Giants took off on an 8-0 run over the next two minutes, a preview of a 23-11 run to close out the period and give Wabash a 47-27 lead at halftime.
Â
The Little Giants continued to extend the lead in the second period, hitting three early three-point baskets for a 60-36 lead. Wabash maintained a 30-point lead throughout most of the final period before finishing with a final scoring run for the 41-point victory.
Â
Davidson paced the Wabash offensive effort with 29 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. He finished 14-of-15 from the free throw line.
Connor Rotterman added 12 points, while Hallstrom picked up his first double-double of the season and tenth of his career with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Tyler Watson came off the bench to add 10 points as part of a 48-point performance by the Wabash reserves.
Â
Wabash shot 47.8 percent from the field by going 33-of-69 while holding Hiram to 29.4 percent (20-of-68). The Little Giants dominated the paint on the offensive end of the floor by scoring 40 points inside compared to 18 points for the visiting Terriers. Wabash also converted 13 Hiram turnovers into 13 points while committing only eight turnovers in the game on offense.
Â
Christian Crespo led Hiram with 21 points and five rebounds.
Â
The 10-0 start to the season is the best since Wabash picked up 13 consecutive wins to begin the 2010-2011 campaign. That 2010-11 Little Giant team also started with five consecutive NCAC victories.
Â
Wabash posted back-to-back 100-point efforts after defeating Allegheny 108-65 Thursday evening. Combined with Friday's win over Hiram, it marks the first time since 1981 a Little Giant team has scored 100 or more points in consecutive games. Wabash defeated Blackburn 107-68 on January 7, 1981 then followed with a 109-79 win against Albion on January 10. That 1980-81 team eclipsed the 100-point mark five times during its 19-6 run.
Â
Wabash will travel to Springfield, Ohio to participate in the Kiwanis/Wittenberg Holiday Classic December 28-29. The Little Giants open against Wilmington College December 28 at 4:30 p.m. followed by a Saturday matchup against Bryant & Stratton College December 29 at 2:15 p.m.
