Wabash opened the 2018 baseball season over the weekend with three games at the Grand Park complex in Westfield, Indiana.
The Little Giants exploded for 12 runs Friday night in a 12-4 victory over Transylvania University. Saturday Wabash defeated the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh 5-4. The weekend series ended Sunday with a late Wabash rally to trim Transylvania's lead to one run in the top of the ninth inning before falling 10-9 in the conclusion of the series.
Wabash (2-1) pounded out 31 hits in the three games for a team batting average of .282.
Eric Chavez paced the team with six hits in 13 at bats.
Bryce Aldridge added five hits in eight at bats to hit .625 for the weekend.
Jackson Blevins drove in six runs in two games in his Wabash debut. Chavez,
Jared Wolfe, and
Matthew Annee chipped in three RBI apiece over the three-game set.
Bryan Roberts earned the victory in game one, pitching six innings while limiting Transylvania (1-2) to three hits and one unearned run. He struck out five and walked three.
Zach Moffett scored the win in relief against Wisconsin-Oshkosh (1-1). The sophomore pitched the final two innings of the contest, holding Oshkosh without a hit with a strikeout and walk. The Little Giants rallied for the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a Chavez single to short to score Aldridge.
Wabash 8-3 to Transylvania in Sunday's finale before rallying for two runs in the fifth and another pair in the sixth inning. The Little Giants trailed 10-7 heading into the top of the ninth inning before a triple from
Jared Wolfe brought
Tyler Downing home with one run.
Sean Roginski drove Wolfe home a batter later to cut the lead to one run before Transylvania recorded the final two outs to close out the game.
The Little Giants will play seven games in Tucson, Arizona from March 4-9 as part of the team's annual spring break trip.
