Extra-Base Hits Power Wabash to 10-6 Win Over Bethany Lutheran

Bryce Aldridge and Jordan Hansen each collected four of the 20 hits for Wabash Tuesday in a 10-6 victory over Bethany Lutheran College to continue the spring break schedule in Tucson, Arizona.

Sophomore transfer Jackson Blevins added to the hit parade, smashing two triples to tie the single-game school record for three-base hits. Jared Wolfe added a triple to the hit column, as well, to move into a tie for second with ten on the Wabash career triples list. The Little Giants tied the school record with three triples in the game.

Wabash (5-2) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Hansen scored after reaching base on the first of his three doubles. He came home on a pickoff play at first base for a 1-0 Little Giants lead.

Bethany Lutheran (2-2) tied the score in the third on a wild pitch, but Wabash answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning.  Wolfe opened the inning with a triple, then scored on Blevins shot to right center for a 2-1 Wabash advantage.

Hansen doubled again to open the fourth inning, scoring on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt at first to give the Little Giants a 3-1 lead. The Vikings responded with three runs in the top of the fifth with a two outs on a ball to right field that was lost in the sun to make it 4-3 in favor of Bethany Lutheran.

That lead was short lived. Aldridge singled, stole second, then moved to third on a base hit by Andrew Jumonville before scoring on a single from Eric Chavez. Hansen brought Jumonville home with a single to center for a 5-4 Wabash lead. Henry Wannemuehler added another run with a sacrifice fly before Nick Chao made it 7-4 in favor of Wabash with a single to center.

Wabash tacked on another run in the seventh on an RBI single by Sean Roginski. Two more runs scored in the eighth on a pair of wild pitches to wrap up the game.

Eric Murphy earned the victory in relief of starter Kurt Lange. Murphy pitched one inning, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk. Ryan Thomas worked 1-1/3 innings of relief, limiting the Vikings to one hit and one walk while striking out three. Kevin O'Donnell earned his first save of the season, retiring the final six batters of the game with one strikeout.

Lange worked 3-2/3 innings in his first career start, allowing one run on two hits with four walks and six strikeouts. Sean Smith threw an inning of one-hit relief, recording one strikeout.

Wabash is off Wednesday prior to playing Marian University of Wisconsin Thursday at 7 p.m. MST.
