Cochran Dominates On The Mound In Doubleheader Sweep At Oberlin

Wabash completed a two-game series sweep at Oberlin Saturday afternoon to improve to 8-4 in North Coast Athletic Conference games and 21-9 overall. The Little Giants defeated the Yeomen 11-5 in game one before Cody Cochran dominated the hosts with a three-hit pitching performance in an 11-0 victory in game two.

Wabash pushed five runs across in the second inning in game one to take the early lead in the first game. Eric Chavez collected his first of seven hits for the day with an RBI single to drive in Bryce Aldridge with the first run of the game. A fielder's choice by Tyler Downing scored the second run of the game. Downing came around to score on an Oberlin (9-20, 2-9 NCAC) error to make the score 3-0. Jackson Blevins closed out the scoring in the inning with a two-run double.

Aldridge drove in two more runs in the fourth to give Wabash a 7-0 advantage before Oberlin touched up starter Bryan Roberts for four runs in the fifth. Roberts finished with no decision after pitching 4-1/3 innings. He gave up six hits and four walks leading to four runs. Roberts also struck out four batters.

Wabash answered with a run in the sixth inning when Aldridge singled home Sean Roginski. Pinch runner Nick Chao scored another run in the seventh on a wild pitch to race home from third base. The Yeomen scored their final run in the bottom of the seventh to trim the Wabash lead to 9-5, but the Little Giants tacked on two more runs on a double by Aldridge in the ninth to give him five RBI for the game and secure the six-run win.

Zach Moffett (3-0) was credited with the victory in relief. He pitched the final 2-2/3 innings, holding the Yeomen to one hit. Kevin O'Donnell pitched one inning, allowing one hit and one walk. Eric Murphy surrendered one run in one inning of pitching for Wabash.

Cochran limited Oberlin to three hits and two walks in game two while striking out a career-high 11 of the 28 batters he faced in the game to improve to 6-2 for the season. Erich Lange sealed the victory by allowing just one hit and one walk in one inning of work in relief.

Wabash scored all the runs it would need in the top of the first inning. Blevins singled home the first run of the game, then scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Henry Wannemuehler drove in another run in the third inning with a single down the left field line. The Little Giants tacked on four more in the third on RBI on a single by Aldridge, a triple by Andrew Jumonville, a sacrifice fly by Matthew Annee, and another single by Wannemuehler to move in front 7-0.

The Little Giants scored three more runs in the fourth and another in the sixth to earn the win.  Wannemuehler led the team with three RBI on two hits. Blevins and Aldridge added two hits apiece, as well. Aldridge finished the day with seven RBI in both games combined.

Wabash travels to Manchester University for a single nine-inning game Sunday at 1 p.m. before returning home to face Mount St. Joseph University in a single game Monday afternoon.
